It’s seven p.m. on a day as many others when somebody stops the usual stroll of Archie Baldwin, quiet filing clerk in a detective agency, by throwing a pizza piece on his trousers. The deed, apparently an annoying but harmless incident, seems to trigger a sequence of unlikely events, making Archie wonder whether he still got his reasoning capability. Let alone the mysterious murders , Archie makeshift detective , begins to investigate on. Who has literally been scared to death his friend Geronimo Kamiski? Who is “The Big” whose coming is announced by threatening inscriptions on the walls of Geronimo’s flat? Why the girl of the shop where Archie bought his trousers has been killed? Is a conspiracy against Archie on the go or it’s only his wild imagination driving him out of his mind? The investigation goes on among ongoing twists underlined by the loony songs of the Chalking Pancakes, up to an open ending or better, very much open ending. With his undeceiving cynical way and out of ordinary humour, Alessio Pracanica uses this story at the limits of the real world as a metaphor for sketching a society running wild, a more and more dissatisfying political system and to tell us they need to find new landmarks for building a man-shaped living at last . So, if at a first stage you laugh, you really laugh a lot, but then thinking twice you will find yourself involved in a far deeper and more serious consideration. A novel over the top, helping us to think between one line and the other.
